Ortega Wins

Monday, November 6th, 2006

It was very interesting being in Nicaragua during the elections. The most interesting thing for us was seeing the Florida born owner of the Surf Sactuary the morning after the election when he found out that Ortega had won! There is a good chance all those guys are going to lose all their land. Their gardener was saying that he voted for Ortega because he thinks that he will kick out the gringos, and give him their house.

It is crazy that after all that civil war and crazy stuff that went down only 9 years ago, now he is back with a new face, it should be interesting to see what happens in the Nicaraua’s near future. The propoganda was the craziest We’ve seen in any country, there were 100 foot billboards everywhere, banners, flags, parades…total chaos. We got some really interesting video footage.

Surf Sanctuary

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

The surf in Nicaragua is off the hook. We had a total epic getting here, with some AWEFUL road conditions. It took us 5 hours drive a sketchy dirt road that normally takes 1. We had sort of a clueless attempt to find Popoyo (we heard that this was good from a couple folks up in El Salvador). It was the worst road that Baby has ever attempted, but we were pleasantly surprised on how well she handled it. We aren’t going to make a habit of driving these terrible roads until we get closer to our destintation.

We never made it to Popoyo, but we found Playa Santana that seems to be the very best spot in the world. By far the greatest beach so far on the trip (middle of nowhere, Nicaragua). We are hiding out for the elections which are today, so we will see how that turns out. There are a lot of travel warnings going around.

The Surf Sactuary is one block from the beach, and they welcomed us right in.

We are LOVIN the surf here in Nicaragua. We could easily stay here the whole 9 months!~

Once we crossed the border into Nicaragua, reality set in.  the roads have been some of the worst we’ve seen.  We often get passed by bikers and walkers!

The kids cling onto the truck everywhere we go here.

We got flagged down by this farmer that was curious about how the truck worked, and what we were using for fuel.  He was stoked, and gave us some corn for a present.

Our fist views of lake Managua were stunning.

Isla De Tigres

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

We decided to get on track for some surf, but we couldn’t leave Honduras without visiting at least one island on the pacific side. Isla De Tigre is a volcano island off of Honduras’s small southern coastline.
