Oil and Water Project

The Dalton Highway is a 415 mile long dirt road that follows the Alaskan Pipeline from Livengood, AK to Prudoe Bay. It was built in 1974 to address the nations rising demands for oil. It contains the only bridge over the Yukon River, disects the Artic Circle and passes over to the Northern slope of the Brooks Range. It makes a very bumpy start for fellow Pan-American travelers.

I didn’t know what I would feel as we pulled away from Dead Horse. In the most stressful moments of the planning process, the idea of beginning to drive continuously south was always sort of surreal. It ended up being an extraordinary day. Tyler and I set the date back in November, 2004 for July 1, 2006 to follow the endless summer all the way North to South. Well that’s today, and here we are. The most exciting thing about it, is that we have the ability and the knowledge to use this great escapade to show the world the simplicity and the availibility of alternative energy. It is an ironic coincidence that the journey began in the biggest non-renewable energy facet of our great nation.

We pulled away from Dead Horse at 12am July 1st, and came across a herd of Caribou funneling across the road.

Not 5 miles later, a huge Griz…

Then three more.

Then we broke down in Mosquitoey HELL.  Bill just stared running his truck on B100, and the fuel filter got clogged up.

There were scenes like this around every corner. With 24 hours of sunlight, our sleeping schedules were backwards. We snapped this shot at about 4am. We didn’t get a photo, but we saw a moose and calf swimming across a lake at about 4:30 that was one of the most beautiful things We’ve ever seen.

We crossed back over the Artic Circle at 8am.
