Stowe Middle School

FROM UMIAK:)

Umiak was very excited to have the Seth & Tyler visit Stowe, VT with their
bio-diesel vehicle.A few people were able to stop by the store to see how it
works and they really generated enthusiasm among the school kids they
visited. Their visit created a buzz not only among paddlers but with the
general public as well. The owner of Umiak, Steve Brownlee, has started to
research
converting his diesel shuttle bus to bio-diesel as a result of the visit. He
will promote bio-diesel through the graphics on the bus when the
installation is complete. Everyone here will be keeping track of Seth and
Tyler on their Web blog as they continue their journey. Thanks for coming to
visit us in Vermont! - Mike Strojny, Program Director, Umiak Outdoor
Outfitters, Stowe, VT

Thanks to the 7th graders at Stowe Middle School for participating in our curriculum. Still waiting for your poster entries!!!

Boating, Blowouts and Biodiesel

blackh20.jpg
On our way from N. Carolina we stopped off to paddle the New River near Fayetteville. After running into the frenchies from team adrenergie/Quebec city, they convinced us to go hit up the Upper Blackwater in West Virgina.

This proved to be a good call because the next day Red Creek, one of the best rivers in the Southeast ran. It runs so infrequently that we had never even heard of it. Once we dropped into Super slide, (a 1/2 mile long steep, clean slide) we knew this was no ordinary run. It was a day to remember, thanks to Adam Johnson for getting us out there.redcreek2.jpg

The day was perfect, and we were on the road to PA in no time……. except another double rear tire blow out left us stranded in the middle of the road in po-dunk West Virgina. AAA couldn’t even locate us, so we set up camp.

The next morning, we hooked up with the local boys to help us get back on the road and on our way!

We hadn’t used anything but Waste Vegetable Oil since North Carolina and to continue the trend, John Weld of Immersion
Research helped fill us up with 40 more gallons!!

He also showed us how he makes Biodiesel right at the Immersion Research Warehouse. He uses it to heat his house!!

The event at Wilderness Voyageurs was fun, thanks to Kasia, Roger, John and Kara for helping us create a great night to rally for the cause!somerset2.jpg

Of course we got swarmed with Local Media, so it is safe to say that Somerset will be switching over to Biofuels soon.somerset1.jpg

THE Green, Yes…we still Kayak!!!!

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

Getting this project underway has definitely taken a big chunk of the time that we used to spend kayaking everyday. We are slowly starting to get it back. We had a great time paddling with some of the local legends in Ashville like, Toby Mcdermot, Andrew Holcombe, Meford, ShaneB, John Grace, Woody, and about a thousand others:

This is Shane’s new Diesel truck, and we are confident we have him sold on Bio after an afternoon of terrorizing.

Love it when the “Sunshines”

Oh yeah, the LVM premier WENT OFF!! Of course the rig was the center of the after-party—-

Thanks Ashley, Meford, Alison and John for letting us be involved!
Stay tuned for pics of the upper blackwater, and N. fork of the blackwater in West Virginia…

Randolph Learning Center

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Wow, we had our hands full at the Randolph Learning Center. After our presentation with the 6,7 and 8 graders, we set out to the river. It was their last day before spring break, and we all had some fun as we demonstrated kayaking on the river. The RLC is an alternative school for kids that need extra attention:)
